Doubt Wisely
再び16世紀後期から17世紀初頭にかけて活躍したイギリスの形而上詩人John Donneのことについて。今日は有名な宗教詩の"Satire3"。これはちょっと長いので一部抜粋で。
Be busy to seek her; believe me this,
He's not of none, nor worst, that seeks the best.
To adore, or scorn an image, or protest,
May all be bad; doubt wisely; in strange way
To stand inquiring right, is not to stray;
To sleep, or run wrong, is. On a huge hill,
Cragged and steep, Truth stands, and he that will
Reach her, about must and about must go,
And what the hill's suddenness resists, win so.
詩中の句"Doubt Wisely"はDonneの懐疑論者的な側面をあらわすものだろうか。Donne自身がキリスト教を信じることが難しくなってしまったことも関係しているかもしれない。*1ただ、他の詩からDonneは神にDonneのみを愛すように懇願している。*2Donne自身は神を信じたい自分と神を信じることが出来ない自分の間で揺れ動いていたのだろうか。この抜粋部だけでも"Be busy to seek her"と"stand inquiring right"という矛盾を孕んでいる。
こういう文章というのは宗教という枠を超えて考えさせられるものがあるのではと思う。"Doubt Wisely"は宗教に限らず、日常的に必要な姿勢ではないだろうか。自分も出来てないことだが、読書するときは常に頭の中で「なぜ」と問いかける必要があると思う。例えば論文だとか…
