WILT Thou forgive that sin where I begun,
Which was my sin, though it were done before?
Wilt Thou forgive that sin, through which I run,
And do run still, though still I do deplore?
When Thou hast done, Thou hast not done,
For I have more.

Others to sin, and made my sin their door?
Wilt Thou forgive that sin which I did shun
A year or two, but wallowed in a score?

I have a sin of fear, that when I have spun
My last thread, I shall perish on the shore ;

非常にDonne的ではない詩だと思う。Donne詩は機知に富んだ表現こそ用いつつも、その言わんとするところは明らかであることが多い印象だが、この詩に関して言えばその逆ではないでしょうか。例えば"A Valediction:Forbbiding Mourning"に出てくるコンパスの喩えや"Love's Growth"にあるsphereのような少し頭を捻らせるような比喩この詩にはない。強いてあげるなら3つのスタンザに共通で出てくる"thou hast done"の"done"がDonneという自身の名前との語呂合わせになっているだけで、もしこの詩がDonneのものだと指摘されなければ、僕はDonneがこの詩を書いたとは思わないと思う。"I"と"my"の過剰なまでの使用や、"last thread"をspinするのがClotho*1ではなく"I"であるのはDonneの自己中心的な詩という観点からすればDonne的であるといえるかもしれないが、それでもやはりこの詩が他のDonneの詩と異なった印象を与えることは否定しがたい。
